February 3, 2011 – Boston, MA
According to the center for disease control, heart disease is the number one cause of death in the United States, reporting that every 25 seconds an American will have a coronary event. February is American Heart Month and healthetreatment wants to dedicate our efforts this month to help lower those statistics. We have launched a platform where users can share their experience and learn from others with hypertension, a leading cause of heart disease.
‘Our team wants to ensure that heart disease is top of mind all year long and not just during the month of February,’ says Erin Mullaney, Director of Public Relations. ‘We have created a platform that allows those affected by heart disease to learn from each other and better manage their health.’
Hypertension, also known as high blood pressure, is a major contributing factor to heart disease which currently affects 60 million Americans. Hypertension can be caused by uncontrollable factors such as heredity, age, gender and race. There are also controllable factors which can be altered by diet and exercise, such as obesity, lack of activity and excess sodium intake. Recent USDA dietary guidelines released on January 31, 2011, call for Americans to dramatically reduce their salt intake, a leading cause of hypertension. According to the guidelines Americans currently consume 1 and a half tablespoons of sodium a day.
Highlights from the new guidelines are also urging people to eat whole grains, more dark green vegetables, beans and foods in their most natural form whenever possible. Eating healthier is not new news, but with millions of Americans affected by one or more contributing factors to heart disease such as diabetes, high blood pressure and obesity the reinforcement couldn’t have come at a better time.
We aren’t the only ones focusing on heart health this month. Offices across the nation are hosting National Wear Red Day on February 4, in support of heart disease awareness. Please join our users who have shared their experience with heart disease and visit healthetreatment.cdmail.biz today.
