The definition of basal bolus is a type of insulin regimen often prescribed for diabetics to help control blood glucose (sugar). Basal bolus therapy involves a combination of insulin medications, which are synthetic hormones, taken at specific times of day for better blood glucose control. Basal bolus therapy includes a basal insulin, which is a long-acting insulin that slowly lowers blood glucose levels over time, and a short-acting bolus insulin that works very quickly to lower blood glucose levels. Basal bolus insulin therapy may be prescribed for type 1 diabetics who must take injectable insulin, but may also be used for type 2 diabetics who need insulin for better glucose control.
