Osteoarthritis is a degenerative joint condition in which the cartilage between the joints deteriorates, causing friction between the bones. Osteoarthritis may also cause the formation of extra bone or bone spurs in the joints. Osteoarthritis symptoms include stiffness, pain, swelling, soreness to the touch, and limited motion of the joints.
Often, osteoarthritis occurs as a result of aging and normal wear and tear on the joints after years of use. Osteoarthritis may also be caused by overuse of a joint, and may be related to obesity. Some people with osteoarthritis may notice grating or crackling sound when the joints move, which is known as crepitation.
